The Perennial Overachiever
2004 Trimbach Cuvée Frédéric Emile

"The Trimbach family continues to render some of the world’s finest Riesling." -David Schildknecht, The Wine Advocate

When it comes to Riesling, the Trimbachs are royalty.

Few have a longer, more proven history of producing world class wine from the grape.

Trimbach differentiates itself from nearly every other Alsatian producer by the clarity and detail of their wines. There is always a premium placed on rigor.

In the Trimbach dry Riesling line-up, their epic Clos St. Hune and Freddy Emile are unquestionably king and queen.

While it is very clear that Clos Ste. Hune is a monument that stands on its own, the chiseled Freddy Emile is not far off the mark... and it's ridiculously well priced.

The "Freddy Emile" is one of those best-kept secrets among wine geeks - it is a perennial overachiever. It's idolized for its stature and longevity, for its focus and polished mineral expression. As we put it in the past, it's a "precise locomotive."

Part of this has to do with the careful winemaking, and part of it with the pedigreed slopes from which the wine comes - the Grand Crus Geisberg and Osterberg. These clay-limestone soils are stuffed with fossils that infuse the wines with rocky, powerful, deep and forceful minerals.

The 2004 vintage continues a streak that the Trimbach Freddy Emile has been on since, at least, the epic 2001. The Wine Advocate's David Schildknect eloquently sums up Trimbach's success in the vintage: "The Trimbachs clearly rolled with any punches nature administered in 2004... delivering Riesling of startling clarity and concentration that showcases its minerality and acidity."

It’s hard to imagine a time that wouldn’t be a good occasion to drink a bottle of this. The blazing acidity and force make the Freddy Emile very, very versatile at the table with everything from sushi to rich pork, game and poultry - and everything in between.

While this is in perfect shape for the spring and summer, you also well know that the Cuvée Freddy is determinedly ageworthy, and this should be going strong for a solid decade, minimum.
