The Perennial Overachiever
2013 De Montille Bourgogne Rouge
I'm on an endless hunt for affordable Red Burgundy. Over the years, De Montille's Bourgogne Rouge has emerged as a perennial go-to.
This is one of the humble wines that assumes a big presence in my everyday drinking. It's a bottle that punches well above its weight class.
De Montille's 2013 Bourgogne Rouge offers tons of finesse with a snappy mineral spine, high-toned floral notes and silky dark fruits. It comes across as bright, agile and refreshing. There's a slight rustic mineral edge on the finish that we love and plays really well at the table.
Along with Lafarge and d'Angerville, De Montille has been one of the historical names of Volnay and Pommard known for making epically long-aging, stern wines. Etienne de Montille is currently at the helm and the wines have steadily softened and gained a high-toned purity.
It's the clear and elegant Pinot fruit that places De Montille's Bourgogne Rouge among our favorites (think of people like Chevillon, Lafarge, Bachelet and Mugneret-Gibourg.) The value that it delivers is simply shocking.
Even though De Montille's Bourgogne Rouge is a "little wine," we don't see much of it. I'm sneaking in this offer on Sunday, because there's simply not enough wine for a primetime slot. Please give us your ideal order and we'll try our best.
