The Perennial Overachiever:
2014 & 2015 Bachelet Bourgogne Rouge

Posted by Ian McFadden

Bachelet's Bourgogne Rouge is an integral part of our offerings.

Bachelet is one of those growers whose mastery is felt from top to bottom. Their Bourgogne Rouge is something that many of us buy in quantity every year and stash away.

Along with Mugneret-Gibourg, Chevillon and Lafarge, Bachelet's Bourgogne Rouge transcends the humble category in a big way.

Bachelet's are some of the most authentic, mesmerizing wines in the whole of Burgundy. There's magic to the wines, a mystery that I can never put my finger on and never tire of.

I tasted at Bachelet a couple weeks ago and was blown away by the 2014s. They are vivid, nimble and emphatically mineral and earthy wines. The 2014 Bourgogne Rouge serves as a prime example of how exciting the vintage is here. There's very pure red fruits and a clear soil-inflected mineral dimension.

The 2015 is much more of a powerhouse. Showing the impressive mix of saturating presence and verve that's made the vintage so sought after. For all the power, there's a really beautiful subtlety to the wine, especially for this level.

The ugly side of all this is the quantities. Bachelet is a tiny estate and quantities are always meager. Bachelet's Bourgogne Rouge has firmly established a cult following. It's a safe bet that this will be gone by the end of the day.
