The Ravishing Finesse of Limestone:
Enderle & Moll Pinot Noir "Grand Cru"

Posted by Joe Salamone

Originating from some of the oldest Pinot Noir vines in Germany, Muschelkalk is consistently one of Germany's top Pinots.

Muschelkalk is one of the expressions of Pinot that blows people away. Each time we offer the wine, we are flooded with orders.

For us, this is one of those wines we look forward to every year. We were the first to support this tiny estate in 2009, being simply blown away by the depth, clarity and restraint of the Pinots.

There was nothing else like them in Germany at the time and this remains true over a decade later. The only thing that has changed is our allocation gets smaller, and the wines disappear more quickly!

Today we present a tiny parcel of 2019 Muschelkalk, the only Grand Cru the estate made this vintage, priced as low as $64.95 on 4-packs.

It's fascinating that while both 2018 and 2019 were warm years in Germany and in Europe at large, the 2019 "Muschelkalk" drinks more like a cool-vintage Pinot Noir.

While the fruit is dark, ripe black cherry with beautifully articulated spices, the wine has incredible finesse and precision. There is a linear quality, a prominent mineral core, and a haunting weightlessness that make the 2019 absolutely captivating adding freshness to layers of pristine fruit. It's the sort of wine that you could only imagine coming from old vines in limestone soils.

The estate is famous for the elegance and clarity of their top Pinots and with 2019 they raise the bar, considerably. This is perhaps the finest Pinot Noir they have ever made.

While this is an offer we look forward to every year, it is also an offer that sells out quickly, every year.
