In the last few years, the momentum of German sparkling wine has only accelerated. From Keller's new sparkling wine projects in the southern Rheinhessen to Kissinger in the north, there is a serious renaissance happening right now.

But for the moment, pricing has not caught up. Kissinger's phenomenal "Winzersekt No. 4" can be had for as low as $39.95 in a 4-pack – an absurd value for the quality of the wine.
If the name Moritz Kissinger is not yet on your radar, it will be soon.
Kissinger first came to collectors' attention when none other than Klaus Peter Keller raved about a bottle of his Chardonnay. Since then, his scarce releases have become something of a phenomenon – Chardonnays, Sauvignon Blancs, Weissburgunders, and, yes, Riesling all from the cold, limestone-riddled center of the Rheinhessen.
Yet it could be that Moritz's true love is sparkling wine.
The "Winzersekt No. 4" is a blend of 40% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir, and 20% Pinot Blanc. It has all the punch and force of the "No. 1" and "No. 2," yet it feels both more complex and clearer.
As in the past, the bottling has fine layers of nervy citrus and stone fruit, a tensile backbone of minerals, and aromatic green herbs. As with great Champagne, the dizzying quality is both precision and an almost airy expansiveness.
Yet the No. 4 is more complex. While the base wine is 2023, which gives it the weight and vinous quality, it has reserve wines from 2022, 2021, and 2020. This is the startling complexity.
If the comparisons to top grower Champagnes are easy – and they are – as we've written before, the joy and intrigue here is that the wine is not Champagne: that it is something different.
Even though this is "Winzersekt No. 4," it really still represents the first, exciting chapter of German sparkling wine.
For the moment, this wine is fairly priced and readily available. Let's see how long this situation lasts.
