The Shimmering Beauty of Côte-Rôtie:
2009 & 2012 Benetiere Côte-Rôtie Cordeloux

Posted by Ian McFadden

In Côte-Rôtie, Bénetière may very well be without peer in terms of balance, detail, and streamlined mineral elegance.

Côte-Rôtie is famous for being the most Burgundian expression of Syrah. Bénetière highlights these qualities with its lithe frame of jet-black minerals, floral notes, and dark fruits.

There's intensity, for sure, but the presentation is nimble and bright. Bénetière gets you incredibly close to the beating heart of Côte-Rôtie and its profound beauty.

The 2012 is a gorgeous example of what Bénetière achieves with his Côte-Rôtie Cordeloux. The wine has a brightness and snap, but also has beautifully silky tannins. The balance and fineness is impressive.

In contrast, the 2009 is much more powerful and layered. There's a rush of dark, spice-inflected fruit that's backed by a stern minerality. There is a really impressive length and a detailed finish.

I should close by mentioning that this is a very limited offering. Finding older examples of Benetiere has become very difficult and I don't expect this small parcel to stick around for very long.
