2024 Cascina Penna-Currado Langhe Nebbiolo Bricco Lago

A few weeks ago, we tasted through an epic amount of wines. When the dust settled, this was one of three standouts.

If price is factored in, the 2024 Langhe Nebbiolo Bricco Lago was the star of the show. 

Don't let the price tag or humble Langhe Nebbiolo designation fool you; this is a serious wine. It's very complicated and deep. It drinks like a Barolo that costs twice its price. Equally important, there's a silkiness to the wine that makes it incredibly enjoyable to drink today. 

Penna-Currado may not be a well-known estate yet, but Elena Penna's and Luca Currado's previous estate, the beloved Vietti, is one of Piedmont's renowned addresses. 

Joined by their children, Michele and Giulia, Elena and Luca are working at a smaller and more artisanal scale than Vietti. In acquiring sites for Penna-Currado, they focused on cooler vineyards. 

The first wines were released from the 2022 vintage, and they were instantly promising. Still, this vintage's Langhe Nebbiolo Bricco Lago surprised us with its intensity and just how good it was. 

Sourced from the San Sebastiano vineyard in Monforte d'Alba, the Langhe Nebbiolo Bricco Lago offers a crazy spectrum of flavors. It has sweet herbs, earth, spice, and floral tones along with complex red fruits. There's a really nice balance between accessibility and a firm underlying structure. The total package is beyond impressive. It gives you a sense of exacting winemaking while feeling completely honest. 

I've been closely watching Penna-Currado from day one. Many wine lovers were really sad when Luca and Elena left Vietti. As things have begun to click into high gear, it's clear that Penna-Currado will release extraordinary wines in the future. The 2024 Langhe Nebbiolo Bricco Lago makes this clear. It's rare that I get to offer a wine of this quality for this price.
