For many years, Castello di Verduno has been our go-to for affordable Barbaresco.
In the right vintage, what Castello di Verduno delivers for the money is amazing. You get a compelling combination of honesty and down-to-earth drinkability with a sneaky amount of structure and seriousness.
Still, in a recent tasting of eighteen different wines, the 2020 Barbaresco was a standout. We come to expect purity and deliciousness from the wine, but this vintage shocked us.
At as low as $39.95 per bottle in 4-packs, this is a not to be missed value.
This is not a Nebbiolo with a fortress-like structure of tannins. The relatively gentle tannins allow the wine to showcase its finely rendered dark fruits, spice, and floral notes in a captivating way. Everything combined makes for an irresistible bottle.
In any vintage, this is a bottle that we love having in our arsenal. Few Piedmont wines deliver as much for the money. The 2020 is simply a stellar example of this. We very much agree with Antonio Galloni when he writes: "The straight Barbaresco is the under the radar gem in this range."

Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media: "The 2020 Barbaresco is a very pretty, forward wine that will drink well right out of the gate. Succulent fruit and mid-weight structure give the 2020 tons of immediacy. The straight Barbaresco is not the last word of complexity, but the 2020 is delicious and very easy to drink. Floral and spice overtones punctuate the vibrant finish. The straight Barbaresco is the under the radar gem in this range. Vineyard sites are Faset and Ronchi. What a delightful wine it is."
