The Ultimate Burgundy Outlier:
2014 Gouges Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru La Perriere Blanc

Posted by Ian McFadden

In Burgundy lore, few wines have reached such legendary status as Gouges' La Perriere.

Gouges’ Perriere is based on “Pinot Gouges”, a mutation of Pinot Noir that produced white grapes that Gouges discovered in the late forties. What results is one of the most fascinating white wines in all of Burgundy.

For many of us here, our obsession with Gouges' Perriere kicked into high gear when we bought a cellar with a bunch of bottles with decades of age on them. We've drunk bottles with twenty years of age that showed brilliantly.

The 2014 is one of the great recent vintages of Perriere. Of course, this isn't surprising. 2014 is one of the greatest young white Burgundy vintages that I've tasted.

The 2014s have a completeness to them that shocks me every time I drink them. You get a rare combination of verve and mineral clarity, along with a crazy amount of concentration and presence.

The 2014 La Perriere has a core of driving, stony mineral backbone and a thrilling grandeur of scale. Even in its youthful state, you sense a serious complexity forming. There's herbs, gently tart stone fruits, floral notes and hints of tropical flourishes. The 1er Cru Perriere is a very stony vineyard and you sense that in the wine's tense minerality.

Production of Perriere is modest - somewhere around 2,000-2,400 bottles are produced each vintage. Quantities are very limited. Please give us your ideal order and we'll try our best.
