For many Austrian wine fans, it simply doesn't get any better than Alzinger's Steinertal.
Steinertal is Alzinger's magnum opus - the apex of his style. The site's finessed minerality seems to form a perfect marriage with Alzinger's super-fine and elegant style.
Steinertal is one of the Wachau's best sites along with Kellerberg and Singerriedel.
It's no surprise, then, that finding enough wine for an offer was no easy task and in reality the quantities available remain very small, which is why this is only going out to people who have supported Austria's top wines.
The 2017 flaunts Alzinger's magical ability to combine intensity, delicacy, and detail. It possesses a serious mineral imprint. The 2017 Steinertal delivers a finessed and delineated expression of stone, flowers and fruit. There's an intangible sense of completeness to this wine.
We've been huge fans of Alzinger's wines for over a decade, but the recent vintages have really blown us away. In his I'll Drink to That! podcast interview with Levi Dalton, Leo Alzinger goes in depth about the key changes that have been implemented at the winery in the last few years (regarding lees contact, sulphur use and more) to reach increasingly high levels of quality.
As most of you are sadly aware, the problem with Alzinger is the quantities. Alzinger is only 10ha and the wines are doled out in painfully small quantities. Top wines, like Riesling Steinertal, are typically allocated in 6-24 bottle quantities. I bring that up just to warn you that quantities are extremely limited.
