2011 Bouchard Beaune
1er Cru Vigne de l'Enfant Jésus

The 1er Cru Vigne de l'Enfant Jésus is one of those insider plots where Burgundy reveals one of its secrets.

During tastings, Bouchard will often pour the l'Enfant Jésus after their Grand Crus.

Bouchard owns some heavy hitting Grand Crus - Montrachet, Bonnes Mares, Chambertin, among others - yet, it's l'Enfant Jésus that is Bouchard's flagship wine.

We love half-bottles, especially for wines like l'Enfant Jésus. They require less commitment in terms of money and drinking. You can bust them out to pair with a specific course without having to plan around a full bottle. Half-bottles also offer the ideal format to check-in and see how wines are evolving.

The issue with half-bottles of wines at a level like l'Enfant Jésus is that they’re rare. We have a very limited amount of these. There are only five listings in the entire country for this wine.

L'Enfant Jésus represents one of those extremely rare moments in Burgundy where value, quality and ageability intersect. For this reason, you’ll find it in the cellars of savvy collectors right next to Roumier, DRC, Rousseau, etc.

The Côte de Beaune was the sweet spot in the 2011 vintage. The wines have a gorgeous combination of concentration and tension. Bouchard’s 2011 l'Enfant Jésus stands out as a beautiful example of just how successful this area was.

Burghound notes the "impressive depth" of the 2011 edition. To that we have to add the beautiful mix of stone and earth, dark fruits and flowers all wrapped around a precise structure with suave elegance. The l'Enfant Jésus is a part of Beaune-Grèves, and if Beaune were to have a Grand Cru, it would be Grèves. Beaune-Grèves seems to combine the confident style of Pommard, its fullness of body and its muscle, with the signature elegance of Volnay.

L'Enfant Jésus is one of the few Burgundies that has a long history for incredible quality and ageworthiness that can be had for a fairly manageable price. This is one of our go-to Burgundies and one with a very strong following. As we mentioned earlier, half-bottles of wines like this are rare and we just don’t have many of them. Please give us your ideal order and we'll try our best.

Burghound: "There is a touch of green tea to the gamey and overtly sauvage aromas of dark berry fruit, plum and floral hints. Like the Teurons there is a really lovely mouth feel to the intense, detailed and refined medium-bodied flavors that possess good if not exceptional volume by the standards of this wine. There is impressive depth and sneaky length to the finish as it almost dies out only to recommence. Good stuff but note that patience will be required."
