The Utter Beauty of Lafarge:
2017 Lafarge Volnay

Posted by Ian McFadden

Lafarge's Volnay punches above its weight class.

Lafarge's wines have an understated grace that borders on magical. I'm always excited to be able to offer the wines.

Also, the outrageous top-to-bottom quality of Lafarge's range blows us away. Everything from their Aligote all the way up to their mighty Clos des Chenes is stunning and a benchmark in its own right.

With that said, the Volnay is one of my go-to bottles. It's a wine that I stash in my cellar in quantity. Lafarge's Volnay struts a stony rigor, energy, and a seriousness and complexity that's exceedingly rare for the category. There’s beautiful tension and lift.

Lafarge's 2017 Volnay boasts an impressive crackling brightness and brilliant clarity. It's difficult not to be wowed by the wine's detail, precision, and harmony. There's a completeness to the wine that's really compelling.

Lafarge is one of our favorite producers; there is just something about the delineation, the fine-ness, and the purity of the wines. The 2017 Volnay is the perfect example of this.

Burghound: "An appealingly layered nose is also admirably fresh and bright with its mix of various red and dark berries that also display hints of spice and earth. The rich and attractively textured medium weight flavors manage to retain equally good detail on the softly mineral-inflected finish that it at once finer, more complex, longer and better balanced."
