"Bollinger’s Champagnes are often known for their richness, but whenever I taste one, it’s usually its fineness that I notice first and foremost.” -Peter Liem
I often think about the Peter Liem quote above. It's a concise and spot-on summary of what Bollinger is all about, especially the R.D. bottling.
Today, I'm happy to offer Bollinger's stunning 2008 R.D. for the sharp price of $265.95.
Bollinger's R.D. bottling is a later release of La Grande Année, their prestige cuvée. R.D. is aged longer on the lees, and this turns up the volume and complexity considerably. We'd be remiss not to mention the yang to this yin of volume: the fineness, the freshness, the downright steely acid and minerals.
The 2008 R.D. offers one of the best opportunities to witness the class and sheer elegance that the wine can offer. There's no doubt that it will go down as one of the great R.D.s of the past three decades.
The 2008 champagne vintage continues to blow me away. The wines are all about purity, harmony, and an energetic structure. We love the total package. I've cleared up a lot of space in my cellar for the 2008s. I'm excited to see how they age.
The Wine Advocate's William Kelley captures our thinking about the wine well when he writes: "When I was tasting Bollinger's brilliant Grande Année in this vintage, I was trying to imagine how good the 2008 Extra-Brut R. D. would be, as the style of the vintage seems almost perfectly adapted to this cuvée. Four years later, we have the answer, and the wine is brilliant."
This is a special vintage for Bollinger's R.D. It's hard to imagine a vintage and wine dovetailing as well as it does in the 2008. Don't miss this.
