Bordeaux's Way Left Bank
2007 Cheval des Andes
1st Growth at 1,100 Meters

"There are no doubts about the 2007 Cheval des Andes... [It has] a suave personality in the manner of a First Growth Bordeaux." - The Wine Advocate

Cheval des Andes is a wine that I've been curious about and tracking closely for some time. The pedigree here is just too extraordinary to ignore and the wine just too impressive.

The 2007 marks the finest wine that the formidable partnership between Chateau Cheval Blanc, one of Bordeaux's finest, and Terrazas de los Andes has ever produced. It gives me great pleasure to offer this wine at just about the lowest price in the world.

In 07, it all came to together. This is a "don't miss" wine.

The comparison to First Growth Bordeaux helps to get a snapshot of the complexity and sophistication on display.

When faced with a wine at this quality and at this price, it's impossible not to Back Up The Truck. This is a wine to break out this summer when you're grilling rib-eyes instead of burgers or looking for an impressive glass of red when you're sitting on the deck.

To be honest, I've had some skepticism about Argentina's ability to make wines that can compete on the stage with the world's best. 2007 Cheval des Andes puts those concerns to bed. (If Bodega Chacra hasn't already proven that with its Pinot Noirs.) The wine is just that compelling.

Think of the harmony, the class and ageworthiness of top-flight Bordeaux and add a dose of the hedonistic fruit and power of the New World and you begin to get a picture.

Cheval des Andes is a product of an obsessive surveying and selection of Argentina's top vineyards and the sensitive and astute winemaking from the team at Cheval Blanc: Pierre Lurton, in particular, and the man on the ground, Nicolas Audebert.

The vineyards that were identified as being "Grand Cru" for Cheval des Andes lie 1,000-1,100 meters above sea level. This is undoubtedly Argentina's "sweet spot". At these elevations, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec along with the other Bordeaux varietals achieve perfect balance and harmony - there's a sense of elegance, a layered complexity of fruit and spice, and above all, an impression of completeness that only the world's best wines possess.

As I mentioned at the opening, this is one of those wines that's simply not to be missed. This is pedigree actualized - it's world class wine in every way. These days values like this are few and far between and don't last for long.
