Today, I'm happy to offer a very modest parcel of the Family Reserve 15 Year.
The style of the Old Van Winkle Distillery bottlings is unmistakable. It's powerful, intricately layered, and complex. There's nothing like it.
By the time you reach the "Family Reserve" (the 15, 20, and 23 year bottlings), you get lavishly layered complexity. On the nose, there's such a broad spectrum that you return to it again and again without ever getting to the bottom of it. Think of a complicated mix of toffee, vanilla, and baking spices.
What makes me especially fond of the 15 year is that you have the intensity and complexity of age without the full throttle power that can overwhelm. Some brightness and lift sneaks in.
I'm going to cut this short. Before closing, I just need to underscore the rarity here: the quantities on offer are minuscule.
