"There is outstanding intensity"
2021 D'Angerville Volnay 1er Clos des Ducs

Clos des Ducs produces some of the most intense, mineral-driven, and deeply complex examples of red Burgundy.

D'Angerville's 2021 Clos des Ducs is an incredibly luminous and pure vintage for this wine, which is consistently one of my favorites.

As Burghound writes: "The domaine rarely seems to miss these days and the 2021 vintage is no exception."  He goes on to compare the style of the 2021s to the 2010s. The domaine's 2010 Ducs is an incredible, utterly classic example of the wine. Sadly, d'Angerville's production was a fraction of the normal.

The 2021 Ducs is deep, agile, savory, and bright. In short, it checks all of the boxes. There's a beautiful harmony to the wine and an architecture that promises that it will age very well, even in the context of Ducs' legendary aging ability.

Ducs is a 2.4-hectare monopole that can trace its roots back at least 500 years. It has a high elevation at 324 meters and is a steep, southeast-facing slope with chalky soils. In short, Clos des Ducs is a special site, and it shows.

I'll wrap this up. Ducs is one of the iconic wines of Burgundy and this represents the 2021 vintage at its best.

Burghound: "A slightly more restrained nose grudgingly offers up its aromas of red currant, floral, spice and vaguely garrigue-like wisps. There is outstanding intensity to the slightly bigger and more powerful yet still gorgeously textured flavors that also exhibit a borderline pungent minerality that seems to build on the compact, serious and youthfully austere finish that displays stunningly good length. As is virtually always the case with Clos des Ducs, extended patience will absolutely be necessary."
