2008 Produttori Del Barbaresco:
Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota
& Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo
"Simply put, these are the very best young Riservas I have ever tasted from the Produttori." -Antonio Galloni
This gets down to the heart of the matter. Produttori's 2008 cru bottlings are just killer.
We've deeply admired their wines for many, many years, but this marks our first offering of young Produttori. The wines are just too impressive in 2008 not to offer.
The ridiculous level of quality is just part of the story. Whenever you discuss Produttori Del Barbaresco, it's impossible not to discuss value. These are some of the best values for top-flight, cellar wines. The 2008 vintage here takes the value to a new plane.
The '08 vintage in Piedmont is ultra-classic, pure and precise. It's the first vintage since 2001 that combines such a level of complexity and refinement. Very few vintages deliver such completeness, such harmony.
The vintage allowed for a beautifully clear expression of each vineyard. This is what Galloni means when he writes that the Rio Sordo is "a picture perfect example of site." Rio Sordo is famous for its gorgeous combination of floral, quiet elegance and spice-tinged red fruits. In 2008, all of these elements come together with shockingly clear detail and clarity of expression.
To turn to the Muncagota, it too is just on another level. Galloni says, "This is a great showing from the Muncagota." There's just no denying the wine's success in 2008. It boasts a deep core of dark red fruits, spice, tar and roses. The wine is animated by a great combination of energy and regal elegance. Please note that Muncagota is the same wine as Moccagatta. In 2007, they changed to the regional dialect spelling of the name.
As I said, these wines represent some of the greatest cellarable values that we know. In 2008, they're not to be missed.
