A Champans for the Ages
2012 D'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Champans

"This beauty is one to bury in the cellar and forget for a very long time." -Burghound

Champans is a distance runner - bottles from the 60s are still gorgeously fresh and mind-blowingly good.

The 2012 Champans has a level of concentration and structure that leaves little doubt that it will serve as a monument to this great domaine for many decades to come.

It's brutal knowing how good d'Angerville's 2012 Champans is. You've probably heard how short the 2012 Burgundy vintage was, but at d'Angerville it's extreme - production was down by 75%. Finding enough wine for this offer was no easy task.

I'm happy to offer d'Angerville's 2012 Volnay 1er Cru Champans for $134.95 on bottles and $129.95 in 4-packs.

Angerville is, along with Lafarge, one of the top two producers in Volnay, and one of my personal favorites in all of Burgundy. Among Angerville's incredibly strong line-up, I have a particular soft spot for Champans. It's a rich and powerful expression of Volnay.

Champans takes Volnay's suave textures and elegance and adds power and thrust. The 1er Cru is always marked by a saturating iron minerality and a driving, complex and very long finish. For all its intensity, Champans is always amazingly finessed.

For me, the 2012 nearly perfectly sums up what Champans is about. It's a testament to Guillaume d'Angerville and his team's thoughtful winemaking and just how pure the 2012 vintage is. If you're wondering what I mean by Champan's iron minerality, the 2012 provides a crystal clear snapshot. In addition, there's a gorgeous combination of structure, high-energy punch and haunting perfume.

Nearly every time we offer d'Angerville, it has disappeared by the end of the day. Talking to people, it's clear that word is out about how impressive d'Angerville's 2012s are. As usual, Champans is one of the best.

Burghound: "Here too there is a touch of reduction that is again just enough to shave the top notes off the otherwise pure and elegant nose so I would also suggest decanting this if you're tempted to try a bottle young. There is very good phenolic maturity to the supporting and well-integrated structure that shapes the sleekly muscular medium weight plus flavors that exude a fine minerality on the seductively textured finish. This robust effort is clearly built for the very long haul and other than perhaps trying a bottle young just to understand what you have, this beauty is one to bury in the cellar and forget for a very long time."
