"This beauty is very clearly built-to-age"
2012 Michel Gaunoux Pommard 1er Cru Rugiens

Gaunoux's Burgundies are throw-backs to a different era that scarcely exists beyond the domaine.

The wines do not pull any punches - they are steadfastly old school and unapologetically built for the long-haul.

Beyond all of this, Gaunoux's wines can be absolute stunners. Burghound has called Gaunoux "one of the finest domaines in all of Burgundy."

On top of it all, Gaunoux's are some of the greatest Burgundy values for the cellar. You'd be hard pressed to find a bottle of Burgundy that delivers what Gaunoux's Rugiens does.

Pommard does not have any Grand Crus, but the best sites can rival many a Grand Cru. When it comes to Pommard, Rugiens is tops. Gaunoux's Pommard 1er Cru Rugiens typifies the beautiful finesse and power that the site is famous for.

Gaunoux's 2012 Rugiens dramatizes the muscle and refinement that his Rugiens possesses. It's dense and has incredibly nuanced complexity with vivid soil tones.

The 2012 vintage is a dream brew for Gaunoux's Rugiens. Gaunoux excels in vintages where there's an extra layer of fruit and richness. The 1990s are beautiful and we have very high hopes for the 2012s. The vintage provided a cushion for the structure that Gaunoux always possess along with an extra dimension of complexity.

The list of reds under $100 that can benefit from a few decades in the cellar is pretty slim; I can only think of a handful. However I arrange that list, Gaunoux looms large. When it comes to his top wines like Rugiens, they are very hard to beat.
