Bachelet's Gevrey is one of those special wines that far transcends its appellation.
On paper, it's only a villages wine. In reality, it delivers a depth, elegance, and ageablity that greatly surpasses expectations for the category. Very few village wines hit this level - Roumier, Mugneret-Gibourg, Fourrier... The list is short.
If you're looking for evidence of the perfectionism that animates this estate, you don't have to look any further.
My obsession with Bachelet's Gevrey started nearly a decade ago when I had a bottle of the 1990 that blew me away. Subsequent old bottles have driven home just how well the wine ages.
Today, I'm happy to offer Bachelet's 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin for $115.95 per bottle, the lowest price in the country.
Bachelet's 2016s were one of the standouts of my Burgundy trip last winter. This is easily one of my favorite collections of the vintage. The wines have an incredible purity and concentration.
In 2016, the Gevrey combines lift with serious presence. The 60-70-year-old vines along with the very low yields of the 2016 vintage really make themselves known in the wine's intensity. This is rich, meaty Gevrey, with all the stunning soil-inflected complexity that it entails.
Bachelet is a tiny 4ha estate with an outsized reputation. Everything that Bachelet touches is special. For me, the 2016 Gevrey is simply a magical bottle.

Burghound: "A perfumed and very pretty nose features notes of various dark berries, spice, earth and a hint of violet. The rich, naturally sweet and very round medium-bodied flavors possess both excellent mid-palate volume and outstanding depth on the well-balanced finish. As it almost always does, this boxes well above its weight for a villages level Gevrey."
