"This is a great vintage for this wine"- Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate
This is a hard wine to part with.
Early in the summer we bought a mixed parcel of choice Lopez - '95 Tondonia Gran Reserva, '96 Tondonia Blanco Gran Reserva and '01 Tondonia Blanco Reserva. We offered the first two and sat on the 2001.
When it comes to vintage, price and sheer quality, the 2001 Tondonia Blanco Reserva is a home run. Generally speaking, we love the balance and finesse of the 2001 vintage in Rioja. For López, it's a gorgeous, classic vintage.
The 2001 Blanco is vibrant, beautifully elegant and long. In short, it's totally stunning.
It's difficult to find an apt comparison for López's white, but the first wines that come to mind are whites from Chateau Simone or Bordeaux. However, you have to toss in more exposure to oxygen and all the deep, mysterious and subtle complexity that comes with it.
What really wows us about the 2001 is how it possesses all the nuanced depth of the best López Blancos, and adds a captivating high toned, nervy element. This youthful brightness lends a dynamic and regal grace to the wine. Beyond this, everything seems to be perfectly proportioned.
López's whites are special wines. A bottle of '57 Tondonia Gran Reserva is a Crush legend. Their unyieldingly traditional approach produces aristocratic and unforgettable wines. The 2001 Tondonia Reserva represents López at the top of their game.
