"This is a magnificent set of new releases from Luca Roagna."
2020 Roagna Barolo La Pira

We continue to be amazed by the wines that Luca Roagna is turning out. At this point, there's little doubt that he is one of Italy's major winemaking talents.

Roagna coaxes an almost unheard-of level of nuance, purity, and textural appeal from the Nebbiolo grape.

I recently tasted through Roagna's 2020s and was blown away by the lineup. The combination of clarity, elegance, and classicism is outstanding.

Today, I'm happy to offer Roagna's 2020 Barolo Pira.

While Roagna is closely associated with Barbaresco, the Barolo Pira is, along with Barbaresco Pajè, a flagship bottling. Roagna's Pira is always one of the most finessed and lifted of their collection.

The Roagna family purchased the monopole site in 1989. It is endowed with vines going back to 1937 and a fascinating soil composition of iron-rich limestone and blue and gray marls.

In 2020, Pira has an incredible amount of nuance and depth. It has soaring power and elegance. It's shocking how the wine manages to combine such density and verve. The spectrum of flavors is jaw-dropping — layered red fruits, game, earth, tar, herbs, spice, etc.

In the past handful of years, Roagna has become one of my favorite producers. It's really nice to see them firing on all cylinders with the 2020 Pira. The wine is incredibly impressive.

Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media: "The 2020 Barolo Pira is a powerful tightly wound young Barolo. Dried herbs incense licorice tobacco and crushed autumn leaves add layers of nuance. This starts open with a bit of coaxing suggesting a few years in bottle or a good bit air will do the trick. The tannins are insistent but also polished.."
