Laurent Ponsot is one of the most singular, compelling minds in all of Burgundy.
Since its first release in 1999, Ponsot's Clos de Vougeot has been one of the absolute best bottles from this Grand Cru. If you want to see how good Clos de Vougeot can be, you need to experience Ponsot's bottling. Laurent Ponsot seems to tease out every ounce of intensity and complexity.
Part of the story is location. Clos de Vougeot is a notoriously large and varied vineyard. The grapes for Ponsot's bottling come from a 0.4ha parcel with pebble and limestone soil, in the top, best section of the Grand Cru. More specifically, the parcel is located right near the wall that separates Clos de Vougeot from Grands Echezeaux.
The 2014 Clos de Vougeot is stunning, boasting the grandeur and multi-facated texture and depth that marks Ponsot's wines. It's a majestic wine that is nearly overwhelming in its wild animal power, and yet remains miraculously refined. Burghound's note captures the wine well: "There is superb richness to the voluminous, powerful and punchy flavors."
I strongly advise that you check this out. Ponsot's singular genius is on bold display in this incredibly compelling bottle.

2014 Ponsot Clos de Vougeot VV
Burghound: "This is so deeply colored that it's opaque. The expressive and strikingly complex nose features broad-ranging notes of cassis, plum, sandalwood, spice, earth of the sauvage. There is superb richness to the voluminous, powerful and punchy flavors that display plenty of muscle on the youthfully austere finish. This is a seriously impressive effort though note well that this is going to need at least 10 to 12 years of cellaring first."
