2023 Lauer Kupp Kabinett N°5 Auction

Posted by Joe Salamone

Lauer's Auction Kabinetts are masterpieces.

Lauer's Auction Kabinett has always been one of our favorites. For many, the 2023 Auction Kabinett was, along with Willi Schaefer, the top example of this vaunted vintage.

There have been many German wine dinners where Lauer's Auction Kabinett is among the night's favorites right there with the most vaunted bottlings.

Thankfully, Lauer's Auction Kabinett offers serious value. For $64.95, you get one of the greatest Kabinetts from the vintage. Simply put, this is a brilliant wine.

While many growers use this auction to flaunt all the decadence and lavishness they can muster, Lauer goes the opposite direction. As we've written before, what makes this wine so thrilling is its extreme focus and clarity. This is a wine that polishes down the Kabinett to its essential, mineral core.

The Kupp Kabinett N°5 Auction shows the finesse of the Saar at its finest. It's featherweight with an incredible fine-ness and elegance.

The German VDP Auction bottlings represent some of the greatest wines to come out of the country; they are the best of the best, representing old-vine and special cask, and parcel selections. Even in this rarefied context, Lauer's Kupp Kabinett N°5 is special.

Mosel Fine Wines: "The 2023 Kupp Kabinett N°5, as it is referred to on the central part of the label, was made from fruit harvested at 78° Oechsle on the original Kupp hill and was fermented down to barely fruity-styled level of residual sugar (42 g/l). It offers a stunning nose made of cassis, herbs, white peach, herbs, and smoke. The wine proves stunningly crisp, precise, elegant and racy on the palate and leaves an energizing and still somewhat tart feel in the long and vibrating finish. This is a stunning Kabinett driven by raciness and depth!"
