"This is an absolutely beautiful range of wines!" -John Gilman
2011 Lafarge Volnay
Lowest Price in the Nation
Lafarge is a producer that we keep returning to. And it doesn't matter where in the range it is. From Aligote to his great Clos des Chenes, we love them all.
Today, we focus on his 2011 Volnay. Every vintage, I make it a point to buy at least a few bottles to stash in the cellar for the next 5-7 years or more.
Lafarge's is a far from ordinary village wine that struts a stony rigor, an energy and a seriousness and complexity that's exceedingly rare for the category.
I continue to be amazed by how successful Volnay was in 2011. It may very likely be the star of the vintage. The wines have a depth and a fineness that makes them stand out in a big way.
As they always do, Lafarge's 2011 Volnays demand to be counted among the best of the vintage. Their basic Volnay makes this very, very clear while delivering some of the best value that we've discovered in the 2011 vintage.
Stephen Tanzer calls Lafarge's '11 Volnay "very Volnay" while Burghound focuses on the "ultra-pure" finish. Both comments strike at the core of what makes Lafarge's '11 Volnay so special: it's pristine in its expression of Volnay and the soulfulness that Lafarge does so well.
Of course, the painful part here is the quantities. The yields for the Volnay were 28hl/ha. The fan club for Lafarge's Volnay is numerous as well.
I'll close by saying that this is a really great vintage for Lafarge's Volnay. For fans of Lafarge, Volnay or just value in red Burgundy, this is a don't miss.
