"This is brilliant."
2020 Chevillon Nuits-St-George 1er Cru Les Vaucrains

Chevillon's 2020s are among the vintage's most successful collections.

I've been buying them and offering them at every opportunity. Today, I'm happy to offer Chevillon's 2020 Nuits-St-George 1er Cru Les Vaucrains.

Vaucrains is one of the great vineyards of Nuits St. Georges. It's an imposing wine that's legendary for its ability to age.

Chevillon has produced the benchmark Vaucrains for decades.  Their Vaucrains is sourced from 80-year-old vines that produce a powerful, incredibly deep, mineral, and sauvage wine. Yet, for all of its intensity, Chevillon's Vaucrains is marked by a clarity and precision that only the best Burgundies achieve.

It's amazing how the 2020 Vaucrains manages to balance an almost crushing level of concentration with driving mineral freshness. A jam-packed mid-palate leads to a ridiculous finale awash in earth, minerals, dark red fruits, and a gentle, intriguing wildness. This is clearly built for the long haul.

There are few producers who have earned my respect over the years the way Chevillon has. The wines are bulletproof in terms of how they age and their consistency. They are also some of the most honest, terroir-specific wines I know.

When it comes to the 2020 Vaucrains, Burghound nails it when he writes: "This is brilliant." It's as simple as that.

Burghound: "A deft but still perceptible dollop of wood can be found on the ripe and very fresh nose of poached plum, black raspberry and plenty of sauvage nuances. The texture of the broad-shouldered flavors is also quite sleek with a relatively supple mid-palate that contrasts with the firm, youthfully austere and structured finale that displays huge length and ample minerality. This is also very much built to reward long-term cellaring and here too I would strongly suggest not touching a bottle for at least ten years. This is brilliant."
