"Clearly the finest vintage I have yet tasted of this superb cuvée"
2012 Keller Riesling "von der Fels" Trocken
"It is hard to imagine anyone in Germany having realized more success in this vintage than Weingut Keller" -John Gilman
Despite costing anywhere from half to a third of Keller's Grand Crus, von der Fels is never far behind these epic wines. It's a baby Grosses Gewächs.
In 2012, the margin between von der Fels and the Grosses Gewächs has narrowed considerably. To begin, von der Fels was blended with wine from Keller's top sites, it had two barrels of Abtserde and one of Morstein added.
The inescapable fact is that Keller just nailed the 2012 vintage.
This is, hands down, one of the greatest deals out there. It's as simple as that.
The quality/value ratio hasn't escaped people - von der Fels is one of our most popular Riesling offers. This combined with the word being out about how incredible Keller's 2012s are will lead to a quick sellout.
Keller's 2012 von der Fels is stunning in its layered complexity, its subtle shadings of citrus, pulsating minerals, stone fruits and freshly cut flowers. The level of concentration and finesse is something that's rarely, if ever, seen at this price point. Gilman rightly points out that the von der Fels has "Grosses Gewächs depth in the mid-palate this year."
I would imagine, by this point, the Keller estate needs little introduction. Since Klaus-Peter Keller has taken the reins this estate has become one of the most famous in Germany, especially revered for their dry Rieslings. Jancis Robinson penned in the Financial Times: "[Keller's] wines are the German Montrachets."
Fans of Keller, value and great Riesling should strongly consider going deep here. Von der Fels is a perennially overachieving wine, but '12 marks a new level.

John Gilman: "The 2012 von der Fels bottling has been boosted with two barrels of Abtserde and one barrel of Morstein Riesling from a parcel of thirty year-old vines, and this is clearly the finest vintage I have yet tasted of this superb cuvée. The brilliant nose soars from the glass in a blaze of tangerine, sweet grapefruit, a nice touch of wild yeasts, kaleidoscopic minerality, lemongrass, incipient notes of petrol and a touch of citrus peel in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, pure and youthfully complex, with Grosses Gewächs depth in the mid-palate this year, great focus and grip and a very, very long, still quite young and racy finish. This is an absolutely stunning wine in 2012 and clearly shows that the fireworks at Weingut Keller start way below the level of the GG’s this year!"
