2021 Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Charmes

Lafon's 2021s are simply dynamite.

They are finely etched and tension-filled with ample power and depth. In short, they are a dream brew.

As is often the case, the 1er Cru Charmes represents a high point of the collection. Along with Genevrières and Perrières, Charmes is one of Meursault's great sites. Lafon's Charmes is the benchmark.

Lafon is lucky enough to have very well-situated vines in Charmes Dessus. They are just below the villages greatest 1er Cru, Perrières. What makes Lafon's Charmes stand out among its peers is its grandeur and rigor. Charmes is a site that can get a little plump, but Lafon's is always sculpted and tension-filled.

The 2021 Charmes is a thrilling example of this. Burghound's note highlighting the wine's "intensity and focused power on the refined, balanced and highly complex finale" gives you a very good sense of the wine. The 2021 is incisive, silken, and has a steely minerality.

This is a domaine with many decades at the pinnacle of white Burgundy production. Still, these days it's very clear that Lafon is at the top of their game. Lafon makes some of my favorite white Burgundies, and the 2021 Charmes is undeniably great.

Title

Burghound: "A cool, pure and wonderfully elegant if distinctly restrained nose reluctantly presents its aromas of citrus, floral and spiced apple. On the palate this is almost a blend of the Genevrières and Perrières as there is some of each attribute on the middleweight flavors including minerality, intensity and focused power on the refined, balanced and highly complex finale. This is excellent and should age accordingly."
