Magic Strikes
2013 Schloss Gobelsburg
Grüner Veltliner Tradition
"This is life-altering wine, perhaps the best GV I have ever had, a Montrachet among GVs." -Terry Theise
It's hard to know where to start with this. There's no doubt that this is one of the greatest Grüners you'll taste. It boasts such an expansive depth while walking on tiptoes that it's shocking.
Terry Theise is not alone in his praise. Last fall, David Schildknecht, placed Schloss Gobelburg's 2013 Grüner at the top of his coverage of 2013 Austria.
The 2013 vintage is one of the greatest that we've seen in a very long time. You may have to reach back to 1997 to find a year that compares. It's that pure, balanced and impressive. Still, something magical happened with Schloss Gobelsburg's Tradition.
The short story is that you're dealing with a kaleidoscopic and incredibly nuanced complexity combined with amazing lift. This is Grüner that sparkles and dances with a zippy current of acidity while offering a colossal range. Theise's Montrachet comparison seems apt in this regard.
You have everything from spice, ripe citrus and honey to savory, saline elements. Schildknecht's tasting note captures this well: "earthy, umami-laden foundation of subtly caramelized root vegetables that the palate delivers, studded with peppercorns and drizzled with fragrant floral honey."
Gobelsburg's Tradition bottlings seek to recapture winemaking as it was in the 19th century. The wines are fermented in large wooden barrels and racked frequently to expose the wine to more oxygen. The resulting wine shows a fascinating scale, subtlety and savory complexity.
I strongly advise you to check this out. It's very unlikely you'll encounter such success again any time soon. This is a bottle that will assume legendary status in years to come.
