Faiveley just nailed it with their Bèze in 01; the normally reserved Burghound makes this more than clear with his spirited praise above.
Since 2005, Faiveley has really come into their own, but the 2001 vintage gave more than just a hint of the potential about to be unleashed at Faiveley. We've been fans of Faiveley's 2001 for some time.
As good as it was some years ago, 2001 is a vintage that has only grown in stature - each year the wines grow more impressive. This is the sleeper vintage par excellence, and the value here is all the stronger for it.
The 2001 vintage was sandwiched quietly between the flashier and fleshier wines of 1999 and 2002. In contrast to these vintages, the lean mineral-driven purity of the 01s that causes so much praise today made for angry young wines during barrel tastings. Soon enough, the 2002 vintage relegated it to shadows.
2001 is as serious as it gets, and, as Stephen Tanzer commented: "For the true Burgundy purists, many 2001s will be must purchases. The stars of the vintage may be every bit as good as the best 2002s in the long run." 2001 is a year for Burgundy classicists - it was a year that offered purity over amplitude, with finely etched flavors defined by a cutting, lively acidity.

Gevrey was likely the Côte d'Or's strongest village in 01, largely avoiding the hail that plagued some of the communes farther south.
Clos de Bèze is one of top Grand Crus in all of the Burgundy. Faiveley's 01 shows the combination of finesse and power that has earned it this status with its vibrant and authoritative layering of spice, earth and fruit all wrapped around an elegant and vibrant core.
Naturally, we bought all we could, but quantities are fairly small and this is only going out to people who have supported the Burgundy program here. Still, I'd be surprised if this doesn't sell out by the end of the day. The chance to back-fill your cellar with a value-laden Grand Cru seems too compelling for it not to.
Needless to say, 2001 Faiveley Clos de Bèze has a long and glorious life ahead of it.
