Drouhin's 2016s continue to blow me away.
Across the board, they are crystal clear, featherweight and incredibly elegant. The wines absolutely sparkle and have an extraordinary lift and perfume.
On Drouhin's 2016, Burghound writes "I found the quality here to be outstanding." That sums it up nicely.
The vintage produced one of the strongest examples of Drouhin's Clos de Vougeot in many, many years.
Clos Vougeot is a complicated Grand Cru. Speaking bluntly, many examples of the large site chronically underperforms. This is most definitely not the case with Drouhin. They turn out one of the greatest examples of the site aided greatly by a choice parcel situated mid-slope. Drouhin also has a parcel in the lower portion of the slope that they typically sell off.
Basically, if you want to see how good Clos Vougeot can be, this is one of the essential places to look. This is a Clos Vougeot of serious intensity and complexity delivered with captivating weightlessness and a suave texture. Layers of dark fruit, spice and earth all jump from the glass.
Drouhin's 2016 Clos de Vougeot brings an extra dose of concentration, a very clear, cool-fruited profile, and a nice kick of freshness. There's a magic to how it manages to be muscular and briskly nimble. The tension between these two elements along with the wine's impeccable finesse makes the 2016 Clos de Vougeot really compelling.
Before wrapping up, I should mention that this is a very small parcel and these are the only magnums of Drouhin's 2016 Clos de Vougeot available in the country. I expect them to disappear quickly. For many collectors, it doesn't get any better than red Burgundy in magnum.
