"This is terrific"
2017 Lafarge Volnay: 1er Cru Clos du Château des Duc

Posted by Ian McFadden

There's indescribable magic to Lafarge's wines.

The wines simply hit an almost peerless lever of subtlety and grace.

Lafarge's 2017s are dynamite. They have a crackling brightness and brilliant clarity. It's difficult not to be wowed by the wines' detail, precision, and harmony. There's a completeness to the wines that's really compelling.

The 1er Clos du Château des Ducs is undoubted one of the greatest successes of the 2017 lineup. Burghound really underscores this when he writes: "It's rare that the Clos du Château des Ducs matches the Clos des Chênes qualitatively but it may well in 2017."

The Clos du Château des Ducs is muscular and has an intense mineral imprint. There's incredible purity in its presentation of the red fruits, spice, and floral notes. For all of its earthy punch, it still comes across as beautifully elegant. The 2017 possesses exemptional refinement.

There are times when I can imagine drinking nothing besides Lafarge. That speaks volumes about their consistency, soulfulness, and age-worthiness. The 2017 Château des Ducs is a powerful example of what makes Lafarge so special.

Burghound: "Once again an exceptionally fresh and bright nose mixes ultra-pure red berry aromas with those of spice, tea, lilac and rose petal notes. The mouth feel is notably finer than that of the Clos des Chênes as the mid-palate is supple yet the gorgeously textured backend tightens up considerably and displays superb intensity on the very firm and well-balanced finish. It's rare that the Clos du Château des Ducs matches the Clos des Chênes qualitatively but it may well in 2017. Either way, this is terrific."
