"This is textbook Charmes" - 2016 Bertheau Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Charmes

Posted by Ian McFadden

When it comes to Bertheau, 2016 is the sort of vintage that we've been waiting for.

The 2016s are classic, pure, concentrated and suave. It's exactly the sort of vintage where Bertheau hits a home run. Few producers do purity and transparency better than Bertheau. All of this is amplified in 2016.

I'm very happy that Bertheau's Chambolle 1er Cru Charmes is our first 2016 Red Burgundy email. Bertheau's wines are personal favorites. They exemplify how graceful and pure Burgundy can be.

Their Charmes encapsulate the utter beauty of Chambolle in an archetypal and beautiful way. A bottle of '92 Charmes that we drank a few years ago was stunning.

In short, Charmes offers a perfect glimpse into what makes Bertheau so special. It delivers an incredible amount of finesse and beautiful refinement.

The 2016 Charmes boasts a lovely cast of aromatics - flowers, spice, and dark red fruits all intermingle with a sleek mineral thread. What really makes the 2016 Charmes stand out is its detail, elegance and seductive texture.

The 2016 vintage in Chambolle was brutal when it came to yields. Frost ripped the vineyards. As quoted in Burghound, François Bertheau estimates that yields were down 50%. For a domaine that's only 6.5ha and whose parcel in Charmes is a mere 0.66ha, this adds up to an ugly situation.

I put a lot of effort into tracking down Bertheau's 2016s and especially the Charmes. The wines have so much depth, harmony and vividness that they are "must haves."

1er Cru Charmes

Special Email Bottle Price: $125.95

Burghound: "This is also quite spicy but it's also more perfumed with cool and airy aromas of plum, violet and lavender. Supple, round and utterly delicious and seductive medium weight flavors possess a polished mouthfeel thanks to the moderately firm but fine-grained tannins that possess first-rate depth on the highly persistent finish. This is textbook Charmes that should drink well young but with 6 to 8 years of bottle age too."
