This is Vosne-Romanée
2008 Mugneret-Gibourg Vosne-Romanée
The Grand Finale - "Last Call" Pricing
Some bottles are just special.
And this is one of them; a lovely, thrilling, seductive, plush yet tense Vosne just stuffed with dark berry fruit and wild flowers.
Walking out of the La Paulee tasting in February, I'm not sure there was a collection that impressed us more than Mugneret-Gibourg's 2008s.
Give credit where credit is due: It took one of our favorite Burgundy customers, a west coast insider, to bring our attention back to this bottle. When someone orders a solid case of wine and then comes back for another, and then two more... well, you take notice.
As with most 2008s, the 08 Mugneret-Gibourg Vosne has opened up in the last few months, revealing incredible purity and nuance.
Simple perfection. This is exactly what a village Vosne should be, sturdy yet fine, with notes of topsoil and mineral that recall Bachelet's Gevrey yet this wine is, as a Vosne should be, much more elegant, finer, seductive.
By now, at least to our readership, the fact that the Mugneret sisters are making some of Burgundy's finest reds should come as no surprise. I wish there was some easy explanation for this, but there just isn't.
Aside from being extremely sweet and kind and gentle ladies, sisters Marie-Andrée and Marie-Christine just seem to be in tune with their vineyards in a way few others are.
For those of you who want to get technical: The parcels of vines from which they source their village Vosne-Romanée are within La Columbière, Champs Goudins and Le Pré de la Folie - sites which march together below the village and above the Route Nationale. As a matter of fact, these vines are literally in the Mugneret sisters' backyard.
If you want to get a bit romantic, you could suggest that the sites' proximity to "home" might account for the tenderness, the peaceful harmony this wine so obviously has (again, that indescribable something special).
As the energy and enthusiasm for the 2009s begins to realize itself, with the wines just beginning to trickle in, we want to take another deserved look to the 2008s - it's a vintage we love and the values available in this vintage are just absurd. When the 2009 Mugneret-Gibourg Vosne becomes available, expect it to be well over $70.
This represents the "last call" on this wine - at least in any meaningful quantity and certainly at this price. For those of you in love with Burgundy, in love with Vosne-Romanée, this is very worth having in the cellar... not to collect, but to drink.
