"This stunningly good Clos des Ducs is a clear candidate for the best Côte de Beaune red in the 2020 vintage." -Burghound
Last week, we offered d'Angerville's 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds. Today, I'm happy to offer d'Angerville's 2020 Clos des Ducs.
D'Angerville blew me away when I tasted them in 2022. Burghound places the 2020s as among the greatest wines d'Angerville has produced in the past two decades: "I too have long thought that the d'Angerville 2010s may be the best wines made here in the 21st Century but the breathtakingly good 2020s may indeed one day supplant them."
Even among a cast of thrilling wines, the 2020 Ducs is shockingly impressive.
Clos des Ducs produces some of the most intense, mineral-driven, and deeply complex examples of red Burgundy. The 2.4-hectare monopole can trace its roots back at least 500 years. It has a high elevation of 324 meters and is a steep, south-east facing slope with chalky soils. Simply put, Clos des Ducs is a special site.
The 2020 Ducs has a level of concentration and structure that leaves little doubt that it will serve as a monument to this great wine. The wine works at an incredible scale and with precision. With all of its class, refinement, and impeccable breeding, the 2020 Ducs is a staggering success.
