It's been some time since we've seen a Loire vintage with the energy and the classical proportions of 2021. Baudry's 2021 Croix Boissée captures all of the vintage's brightness, perfume, and soil inflections. It's a beguiling vintage for the wine.
Croix Boissée is one of the most important wines for me. It is an incredibly consistent wine that offers a compelling soulfulness and honesty. I have nearly every vintage of the past fifteen years in my cellar.
La Croix Boissée is sourced from a hillside plot with limestone and clay soils on a chalk base. In Chinon, this terroir is home to the appellation's longest-lived wines. Baudry's Croix Boissée always comes across with exacting detail and pristine clarity.
The 2021 has an astonishing purity and a lovely buoyed lightness of crushed berry fruit and complex savory notes. There's herbs, spice, smoke, sandalwood, and violets all backed by a core of tensile saline minerality.
This is one of the greatest expressions of Cabernet Franc in the entire Loire and costs considerably less than many of its peers. When you factor in how well it ages and the wine's sheer class, it's one of the smartest buys out there.
