Lauer, again, thrills and confounds. This is our newest obsession.
We introduced this bottle last year; it is a wine that represents the furthest extreme in the already extreme landscape of the Saar.
In 2020, Lauer has sharpened the razor's edge even more. This wine was already a tightrope walk of slate and acid; in the ultra-vivid 2020 vintage, the wine is simply electric. It has saturating, pure, crystalline lime-zest notes, salt, wildflowers, and an incredibly fine cut of minerality.
This is a wine that screams of the Saar; it recalls the old-school Feinherbs of the Saar from the late 1980s and 1990s.
For the German wine dorks out there, some inconceivable numbers: 33 grams of residual sugar with a lightning bolt of nearly 10 grams of acid. Yet the wine is a featherweight, clocking in at only 9.8% alcohol.
For the wine lovers and bargain hunters, one more number: We are offering this wine for as low as $22.95 in six-packs. (The wine is shockingly delicious right now, yet it will easily age 10+ years. Drink one now, but try not to drink the rest the same week.)
Even in the already ridiculous landscape of German wine, this is a profound value.
Lauer's Fass 4 is a curious bottle. While Lauer is most famous for his wines sourced from the Grand Cru "Kupp" vineyard, the Fass 4 is sourced from two cooler sites. This is where the extreme voltage comes from. The vigor is what makes us come back to it again and again. We created special pricing on six-packs because we're confident that this is a bottle you'll want to revisit often.Â
