This bottling represents the furthest extreme in the already extreme landscape of the Saar.
Lauer is most famous for his wines sourced from the Grand Cru "Kupp" Vineyard, a site equal to any in the Saar or Mosel. Yet, tucked behind Lauer's village of Ayl are two cooler sites, the Scheidterberg and the Rauberg. These are sites that shape wines of shocking electricity.
If in leaner vintages these sites can't quite match the depth and complexity of the Kupp, in riper vintages, like 2019, these two sites come into perfect focus and craft wines of just epic intensity.
Today we are thrilled to offer Lauer's 2019 "Fass 4" Feinherb at as low as $25.95 per bottle.Â
This is a wine that screams of the Saar, It is one of the raciest and most extreme wines of Lauer's stunning 2019 collection. Expect an extreme tightrope walk of a wine (the 30 or so grams of residual sugar are bracingly countered by over 9 grams of acid) that recalls the old-school Feinherbs of the Saar from the late 1980s and 1990s.
It is ultra-vibrant, with extremely bright lime zest and green citrus notes, an extreme florality that explodes across the palate pushed by the fireworks of acidity.
While Mosel Fine Wines called the "Fass 4" a "superb effort," they also warn the bottle "needs a couple of years to smoothen its edges." While that's true, we've always loved wines that have such purity and cut. Our advice? Drink now and later.
