Ultra-Rare Bourbons (and a Rye):
Pappy Van Winkle
Eagle Rare
& Handy Sazerac Rye
It's taken a lot of work to put this list together.
They represent many of the stars of Buffalo Trace Distillery's sought after Antique Collection.
The Antique Collection has caught on fire. In a matter of a few years, they have become some of the rarest things that we deal with. Every fall we receive a barrage of calls and emails asking about the releases as people frantically try to chase the bottles down before they disappear from the market.
As Bourbon's and Rye's popularity has soared, the supplies have not been able to keep pace, not by a longshot. This is especially true of old Bourbons and painfully so with the Antique Collection.
I'm happy to offer an unparalleled collection of Buffalo Trace's rare Antique Collection.
It's impossible not to begin with Eagle Rare's 17 Year. First, like many people, I believe the Eagle Rare 17 Year is one of the most overlooked of the Antique Collection. Its rich, nuanced, gentle style seems to get lost amidst the other more powerful (and often cask strength) releases. However, that's only part of the reason that I want to lead with it. The other, more important reason is the impressive assortment of the 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 & 2011 bottlings that we've amassed. This is simply an incredible collection.
Then, there's Pappy Van Winkle and the other Old Van Winkle Distillery bottlings. These are easily the most sought after whiskeys. They are also some of the rarest. The Pappy style is unmistakable: it's powerful, intricately layered and complex. There's nothing like it. I'm happy to offer everything from the 10 Year to the 23 Year.
Finally, I couldn't help but include a Rye from the Antique series with the Thomas Handy Sazarec Rye. It's a burly, beloved cask strength bottling. Power and complexity are the headliners, but what I really love about Thomas Handy is how it balances its aggressive character with a tempering richness. There are beautiful floral and spice notes backed by candied citrus and subtle caramel notes.
Before closing, I just need to underscore the rarity here: the quantities on offer are really miniscule and many of them will sell out quick.
