Ulysse Collin Blanc de Noir Les Maillons Extra Brut (2016 Base)

Posted by Ian McFadden

Collin makes some of the most breathtakingly unique wines in all of Champagne.

The wines of Ulysse Collin are individual and intense, working on a grandness of scale that can nearly overwhelm the senses.

The Maillons represents the extreme conclusion of this style. There's a multi-dimensional complexity that seems to hit you from every angle.

Les Maillons is the most powerful wine in Collin’s lineup, sourced from 45-year-old Pinot vines on chalk and heavy clay soil that are harvested at high ripeness. The Maillons has become really captivating in recent vintages. For all of its expansive power, the wine is shockingly delineated and clear.

The 2016 dramatizes the complexity and energy that Maillons is capable of. This is an expansive and aromatically haunting example of the wine. The dark mineral core is very pronounced, undergirding explosive red fruits and flowers.

Ulysse Collin is producing some of the most intriguing and individualistic Champagnes. Over the past handful of vintages, Collin's wines have clicked into high gear. You don't have to look any further than the 2016 Maillons for evidence. This brilliant Maillons shouldn't be missed.

Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media: "The NV Extra-Brut Blanc de Noirs Les Maillons (2016 base) is effusive in its aromatics and also wonderfully deep, while also remaining light on its feet. This is an eccentric, heady style that really emphasizes the breadth of Pinot in its perfumed, fruit and structural feel. I would give the Maillons a bit more time in bottle to fully come together. Bright saline notes cut through a core of sweet red cherry, kirsch, dried flowers and spice. I loved it."
