Unbeatable Value - A California Classic:
2018 Enfield North Coast Cabernet Sauvignon

Posted by Robert Schagrin

This is the greatest value in old school styled California Cabernet Sauvignon.

It's rare that the staff yells across the store for me to taste a wine, but that's exactly what happened with Enfield's North Coast Cabernet.

I have to say, I'm thankful to them for including me in the tasting. Actually, I was blown away. At $45.95 on 4-packs, this is my pick for the greatest domestic Cabernet Sauvignon value I've encountered in many years.

Enfield is one of our favorite California wine producers. While their main focus is on Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah, we are huge fans of their work with the Cabernet grape. In 2017, Ian McFadden named Enfield's 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Fort Ross - Seaview his Wine of the Year.

Tasting Enfield's Cab, I'm reminded of wines from California's "golden age" that I cut my teeth on - Ridge, Dunn, Mayacamas, Heitz, etc. For me, the wine provides reassurance that this more subtle, nuanced, and cellar-worthy style is still possible.

The North Coast Cabernet is sourced from three cool-climate vineyards (Millen, Waterhorse Ridge, and Michael Black). There's little doubt that the long and cool 2018 growing season has contributed a lot to the success of the North Coast Cabernet. It's a vintage that we love for its completeness, purity, and energetic profile.

Before closing, I need to highlight how limited this wine is: only 200 cases were produced. For a Cabernet of this quality and price point, this quantity is considered minuscule. We bought all that we could. We hope that it's enough to cover all of the orders that we will receive.
