Unbeatable White Burgundy Value:
2017 Paul Pillot Bourgogne Blanc

Posted by Ian McFadden

Pillot is making some of the most exciting white Burgundies we've seen.

For us, 2013 was a breakout vintage for the Domaine, and now each vintage seems better than the last.

As Burghound writes, “Pillot has definitely been on a roll over the last few vintages.” In 2017, the streak continues in a big way. When I visited Pillot this winter, I was blown away by his 2017 collection. 2017 is a very strong white Burgundy vintage, but Pillot even transcends the vintage's superlative quality.

You can find plenty of examples of the incredible work that Pillot is doing throughout his lineup, but our favorite is the Bourgogne Blanc.

The 2017 is stunning. It’s concentrated with clearly defined fruit notes and a mineral core. The wine has surprising clarity, verve, and finesse.

Since Thierry took over the Domaine in 2004, he has brought a renewed focus on the health and care of the vineyards, and the results are noticeable across his entire range of wines. Like many young winemakers, Thierry takes a minimalist approach to winemaking, limiting the use of new oak and focusing on transparent, terroir-driven wines. For us, what makes Thierry's wines special is their unmatched purity and crystalline character.

It’s increasingly rare to find great Bourgogne Blanc under $40, and when I got the chance, I bought every bottle of this I could get my hands on. This is an everyday Burgundy you’ll want to have around in quantity.
