Roches Neuves is firmly established as one of the Loire's top domaines.
Out of their brilliant lineup, the Franc de Pied stands out for its nuance and haunting complexity.
Simply put, the Franc de Pied bottling seems to work on a different register. Somehow the wine manages to be tightly wound and endlessly complex.
The wine is based on vines that haven't been grafted on to American rootstock as nearly all of Europe's vines have been to escape phylloxera. Germain planted Franc de Pied Cabernet Franc vines at high density in sandy soils in 2004. Since its first release in 2008, it's been one of his most fascinating wines.
Roches Neuves' Franc de Pied delivers an entirely different textural dimension, length, and precision than his other wines. There's a delicacy and, at the same time, a depth and intensity that's utterly unique. The Franc de Pied bottling always stands out for its freshness and lift.
The 2016 has a beautifully intricate and seamless texture. It stands as one of the top examples of the vintage showcasing a mineral soaked elegance and serious concentration. The subtle complexity covers everything with floral top notes, to a deep savory undercurrent, and detailed core of chalky minerality.
Roches Neuves' Franc de Pied is one of the most fascinating bottles of the Loire. The 2016 is just starting to reveal just how finessed and complicated it is. Production of Franc de Pied is modest and finding the wine with some bottle age is rare. This shouldn't be missed.
