Unknown Alzinger:
2021 Grüner Veltliner Ried Hochstrasser Federspiel

Posted by Joe Salamone

For those who value detail, precision, and clarity, there are simply no better wines coming out of Austria.

Alzinger's wines flirt with flawless balance and a serene, whispering complexity. They hit a level of fine-ness that's unrivaled in Austria.

We always love Alzinger's wines for their calm precision, their detail, and their radiant clarity. No one in Austria does it better. In 2021, the inherent nature of the vintage amplified these qualities. The wines are brilliant.

Today, we're happy to offer the only bottles in the United States of Alzinger's 2021 Grüner Veltliner Hochstrasser Federspiel.

Alzinger's Grüner Hochstrasser Federspiel is a bottle that's rarely encountered in the United States. It's a shame because this is a really exciting bottle. The vineyard is situated between Schütt, which Knoll made famous, and Kreutles. The wine's signature is a sleek energy and beautiful focus. This is a Grüner of incredible snap and cut.

The 2021 Hochstrasser Federspiel really dramatizes the site's steely mineral tension. The 2021 vintage produced Grüners that have a mind-blowing amount of zip. Alzinger's Hochstrasser Federspiel is beautifully clear, bright, and finessed. It delivers citrus, gentle spices, and a saline inflected polished minerality.

Like Smaragd and Steinfeder, Federspiel is a designation ripeness in the Wachau region and falls between the former two. Roughly speaking, Federspiels clock in around 12.5 percent alcohol. In the throw-back, cool 2021 vintage, Federspiels thrived. They have a completeness and length that's rarely encountered in the wines. Alzinger's Hochstrasser is the best example that I've tasted from the vintage.

As most of you are sadly aware, the problem with Alzinger is the quantities. Alzinger is only 10ha, and the wines are doled out in painfully small quantities. Please give us your ideal order and we'll try our best.
