When Mas Jullien's Blanc hits the mark, it is utterly captivating.
It is a wine of unlikely brilliance.
For people lucky enough to have tasted the 1996, it is a legendary bottle. The fact that a white wine from southern France's sun-soaked Languedoc could reach such soaring majesty is mindboggling.
Because of the nearly mythical status of the 1996, I've made it a point to taste every vintage of the wine for the past decade.
The 2021 is the first vintage I've tasted that approximates the 1996. Mas Jullien's 2021 Blanc is show-stoppingly beautiful. It's driven, long, elegant, and supremely clear. It's impossible not to imagine the 2021 aging amazingly well.
The Blanc is a blend of Clairette, Carignan Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Roussanne, and Grenache Blanc. There's a dusty mineral core that's very focused and driving. The wine is further complicated by notes of almond paste, citrus blossom, and stone fruits. There's beautiful finesse.
Mas Jullien's white is one of the great wines of southern France. Even in this context, the 2021 is special.
