When it comes to unyieldingly honest and unapologetically traditional Côte-Rôtie, Levet's wines are without peer.
Neal Rosenthal, Levet's importer, aptly sums up the wines: "If you want the truest of Côte-Rôties...if you admire both the intellectual and the savage, then this is a must-buy wine."
Chavaroche is a brutally rocky and steeply terraced southwest-facing vineyard. Levet's vines in Chavaroche were planted in 1940 and make up approximately sixty percent of the wine. The remainder comes from Mollard, another highly regarded site. Levet's work is meticulous in the vineyard, but the grapes simply do their thing in the cellar – vinification is thoughtful, but there’s no artifice at work.
What results is a raw and untamed expression of Côte-Rôtie. Chavaroche offers up a complicated and rugged presentation of animal, minerals, violets, olives, and dark fruit.
The 2018 Chavaroche is a powerhouse boasting a serious mineral streak and sauvage imprint. It's amazing that a wine with so much unhinged intensity manages to maintain a sense of purity and verve. There's berries steeped in herbs, stones, and spice along with beautiful floral top notes.
Levet is one of the last of the Rhône's old guards and has been a pillar of Crush for over a decade. The 2018 joins the more powerful vintages, like 2005, 2009, and 2015. We expect the 2018 to age beautifully.
