"Unusual in every respect" - 2014 Château Simone Palette Rouge

Posted by Joe Salamone

Tasting Château Simone simply redefines what's possible in Provence.

Compared to the rest of the Provençal wines Chateau Simone stands out for its balance, refinement and poise.

Of course, to a large extent, this is a story of terroir. Château Simone and the Palette appellation occupy a very special place: that unique combination of environmental factors that result in something that seems impossible to reproduce elsewhere. The principle of terroir at its most relevant, at its purest.

Wine writer, Andrew Jefford, says that "the Simone vineyards are unusual in every respect." That observation is certainly spot on. Beyond familiar grapes, like Grenache, Mourvedre, and Syrah, you'll find completely obscure varietals lending their voices to the blend - Tibouren, Picpoul Noir, Theoulier, Castet, and Manosquin.

One of the stranger facts here is that the vineyards face north. This unique exposition means the vines get enough light, but not too much. This, combined with the limestone soils and elevation of 500-750 feet, helps to create Simone's balance and sense of refinement. Simone's importer, Neal Rosenthal, is also keen on citing the pine forest of Mont Sainte-Victoire playing an essential but elusive role in the terroir that manifests itself in an herbal, pine resin, spice quality.

We recently tasted Simone's 2014 and it simply wowed us. This a vintage with class to spare. While the incredibly well calibrated harmony of the 2014 makes us excited to watch the wine evolve for the next couple of decades, it's also a bottle that's really enjoyable to drink today. It's sleek, detailed and silken.

The track record for Simone's aging is a compelling one. An '86 tasted a few years back had picked up the subtle nuances that age brings to a noble wine while still showing plenty of youthfulness. Chateau Simone's wines are a testament to a family's work in a unique appellation and their dedication to producing wines in a traditional manner to highlight just how special Palette is.

Château Simone is an absolutely fascinating wine that's impossible to pin down. This combined with its track record for aging and its sheer uniqueness makes us strongly recommend that you take advantage of special 4-pack pricing.
