Utterly Captivating: Back-Vintage Conterno:
2006 Conterno Barolo Cascina Francia

Posted by Ian McFadden

Francia is one of Piedmont's great wines.

The Barolo Francia comes from one of Serralunga’s top sites. The commune is renowned for the density, texture, and heft of its wines.

Roberto Conterno's Barolos are simply profound, and the Cascina Francia bottling drives home just how incredible the wines can be.

The 2006 Cascina Francia is a shining example of the extraordinary complexity that the wine delivers.

The 2006 vintage in Piedmont has shaped up to be really impressive. Its classic structure didn't reveal its full glory at first, but now it's clear that it produced serious and deeply nuanced wines.

In 2006, Cascina Francia offers up precise and classical Nebbiolo scents and flavors with freshness and structure backed by a punchy intensity. It isn't shy in the power department, but also struts the breeding and finesse. The grandeur and architecture of the wine is amazing.

The explanation for Cascina Francia's greatness is easy. Roberto’s exacting standards focus on perfecting every little detail. The sum is an almost logic-defying profundity. I'm very happy to offer this gorgeous example of Conterno's singular skill.

Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media: "Is Giacomo Conterno’s 2006 Barolo Cascina Francia a traditional or modern Barolo? Great question. Texturally, the 2006 boasts marvelous depth and a level of pure intensity not often seen in traditionally made wines, yet the aromatics, tannin and overall structure are all super classic. This is another austere, tannic Barolo best left alone."
