"Utterly magnificent" -Antonio Galloni
2013 Giacomo Conterno Barbera Francia
Roberto Conterno is one of the world's great winemakers.
Like everything from Conterno, his Barbera Cascina Francia is a special wine. It basically redefines the category.
What separates Conterno's Barbera Cascina Francia from the pack is its ability to simultaneously deliver layered complexity and an ethereal, walking on tiptoes quality.
To cut to the chase, 2013 is a stunning vintage for this wine. Antonio Galloni writes, "this is just about as majestic as Barbera gets." It's dense and enveloping, with explosive mid-palate complexity. For all of its textural reasonance, there's an electric core that keeps it dynamic.
We expect this combination of force and verve to become even more impressive with 5-10 years in the cellar. I don't know of a Barbera available that pays dividends in the cellar like Conterno's. The 2013 promises to be one of the longer lived versions of recent years.
Tasting Conterno's 2013 Cascina Francia Barbera, it's clear that Conterno works on an outrageously high level . Whether it's his Monfortino or his Barbera, he always creates something extaordinary.
