2017 Simon Bize Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Fournaux

Posted by Ian McFadden

As we've said before, Simon Bize makes red Burgundy exactly as we like it.

They are not blockbusters; they do not rely on power. Instead, the wines are mineral and honest, possessing a luscious rusticity and quiet finesse.

If you’re after red Burgundies with stony cores, finesse, and just the right amount of wildness, then this is an essential address to know.

The 2017s offer a perfect summary of what makes Simon Bize such an important producer for us. Bize's 2017 collection is incredibly strong. They are beautifully composed and possess a dazzling clarity.

As is often the case, the 1er Cru Fournaux is among our favorites out of Bize's lineup. Bize’s Les Fournaux has an earthy minerality that is complemented by a palate-staining dark fruit that is simply thrilling. There’s no doubt that this wine is a lot of fun to drink. There's a rugged honesty to the Fournaux, but also plenty of elegance.

The 2017 Fournaux is beautifully poised and rigorous. As Neal Martin writes, it is "very fine and classic in style." I really like the wine's focus and driving, grippy stoniness. The overall balance is finely judged.

This is a great example of how deep, soulful, and wonderfully complex Bize's wines can be. In short, this is old fashioned red Burgundy. Any red Burgundy fan should check this out.

Title

Neal Martin, Vinous Media: "The 2017 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Fournaux 1er Cru offers earthy, brambly red fruit on the nose, along with touches of undergrowth and bay leaf, all nicely defined. The palate is medium-bodied with mulberry and blackberry notes, soft in the mouth at first, yet the structure makes its presence felt toward the saline finish. Very fine and classic in style.."
